Amber De Florio
Graduate, Advanced Diploma of Business (Marketing) major in Event Management.

Amber’s thoughts on her time at APM are below:

  1. What made you choose to study at APM?

The intimate environment and small classes. Being taught by industry professionals as well as the opportunity to work with a company as an intern to gain practical experience..

  2. What were you doing previously to studying at APM?

    At school, completing my HSC.

  3. What did you enjoy about the course you studied?

I enjoyed the fun, intimate environment, which allowed me to establish a one-on-one relationship with both my peers and lecturers. As well as the constant support and guidance from the lecturers, which made the journey alot easier.

  4. What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?

My goal was to graduate with an event qualification and industry experience from my intern company (NSW Premiers Department) which would allow an easy transition into an Events/Marketing position.

  5. What is your current job title, company name and job description?

I am currently working at The University of Sydney as the Event Coordinator. My role is to book and look after events that are held on the University campus, some of which include weddings, graduations, product launches and gala dinners.

  6. Describe what your current role involves?

Supervision of an event from start to finish. Ensuring all elements come together and run smoothly for the client and their guests.

  7. How did you find your current job?

I found my job advertised on the APM job website. The University of Sydney was looking for a graduate from APM to fill the Event Coordinator position. The industry experience gained through the APM internship process was a prime advantage in getting the job.

  8. What were the most successful aspects of the APM courses?

The opportunity to volunteer at various events, attending networking nights which allowed us to liaise with people in our industry and applying the knowledge and skills that we learnt whilst studying in my day-to-day role working for my intern company - NSW Premiers Department.

  9. What advice do you have for other APM students hoping to break into your field?

In the event management field it’s all about who you know, not what you know. I would recommend attending as many networking nights, events or volunteering opportunities as possible to create and expand your network of contacts throughout your chosen industry.

  10. Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after you graduated?

The continuous support and guidance I got from APM once I had graduated was amazing. This allowed me to keep my attitude positive plus I was able to touch base with the careers adviser who rang me regularly, informing me of available jobs appropriate for me. I feel that I was able to gain such a great position because of APM’s recognition and status in the industry.

  11. What other career goals or aspirations do you have?

My future goal is set up my own business which will provide training, mentoring and guidance to companies and individuals, allowing them to excel in their chosen profession or interests. I feel that self improvement and personal growth is an increasingly popular and important topic in both workplace and life.

  12. What other initiatives have you taken to help your career?

I continuously attend networking nights and industry functions to meet people working in events.
