- What made you choose to study at APM?
I spent alot of time searching for courses on the internet and I liked the fact that it was a one year course.
- What were you doing previously to studying at
APM?
I did a Bachelor of Arts (Education) which I completed in 2001 and I attended APM in 2002.
I was coming towards the end of my degree and was unsure what direction I wanted to head (I had however decided that I did not want to be a teacher). I was searching online at home one night and came across the APM course. I loved sport and dreamed of being able to tie my passion together with my career. I remember running down the hallway of my parents place, jumping up and down because after reading about the course and the college I knew this was exactly what I wanted to do. It ticked all the right boxes!
I enjoyed university, however the uni experience is nothing compared to the practical approach to APM classes and the style of teaching. The 6 month internship program was also a big seller for me. I had tried on my own merit to gain work experience and this was providing quite difficult, so the guaranteed 6 month placement was for me a very essential addition to my resume.
- What did you enjoy about the course you studied?
The real life experiences the lecturers gave to the classes.
- What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?
To gain a marketing job in the sporting industry.
- What is your current job title, company name and
job description?
Marketing Manager, Sydney Swans. I manage the Sydney Swans marketing/communication plan.
- Describe what your current role involves?
- Working with agencies to develop and produce TV commercials, radio and print advertisements, as well as outdoor advertising (including billboards, bus advertising)
- Manage all promotions (for example major giveaways with the Daily Telegraph)
- Continue to develop and refresh the Sydney Swans merchandise range.
- How did you find your current job?
I applied through seek.com.au.
- What were the most successful aspects of the APM
course?
The 6 month internship, the oractical nature of assignments and the group work.
- What advice do you have for other APM students
hoping to break into your field?
WORK EXPERIENCE is the key!! An employee looks favourably at someone who has given their own time to learn on the job!
- Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after
you graduated?
Easy. I was lucky enough to secure a job before I had graduated from APM. I secured this job through a contact/lecturer I met at APM. I did however during the year of the course volunteer and undertake work experience whenever possible.
- What other career goals or aspirations do you
have?
To continue to move through the ranks at my current job. I’d like to manage a large team of enthusiastic marketers!
- What other initiatives have you taken to help
your career?
Regular courses on specific areas. Even if it is a course to refresh my memory (ie excel course). I also try to keep up-to-date with other sporting bodies and what initiatives and ideas they are using.
