Veena Rajan

Graduate, Certificate IV Business (Marketing) and now completing APM’s Diploma of Public Relations.

Veena's thoughts on her time at APM are below:

  1. What made you choose to study at APM?

I was attracted by the fact that APM is a specialist institution and well recognised in the industry. I had already gone through the whole four year university degree phase and was enticed by the option of gaining an additional diploma qualification part-time over one year. I didn't think I could do the whole uni thing again!

  2. What were you doing previous to studying at APM?

I had just graduated from a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications at the University of Technology, Sydney the year before. Having decided not to pursue a career as a designer, I decided to try and break into the marketing/communications industry.

  3. What did you enjoy about the course you studied?

The relevance of the course content to my current role as a Communications Officer.
I also enjoyed the practical assignments.

  4. What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?

My goal was to basically get a qualification and gain skills and knowledge that would enable me to further my career in the industry

  5. What is your current job title, company name and job description?

I am currently the Communications Officer for Caritas Australia, the International Aid and Development Agency for the Catholic Church.

  6. Describe what your current role involves?

I write and distribute press releases on our programs and emergency appeals to the Catholic and mainstream media, produce the internal newsletter, create media coverage tracking reports, update our media contacts database, handle media enquiries and schedule media interviews. I am also currently working on the re-design and implementation of our organisation's visual identity.

  7. How did you find your current job?

I came to work at Caritas Australia as a temporary receptionist for one day, and was asked to stay on to continue the contract of the previous Communications support person for a few more weeks. Nine months later, I was still there and having learnt the ropes over that time, I was offered a permanent position!

  8. What were the most successful aspects of the APM course?

Definitely gaining insights into the industry from the lecturers who all had relevant professional experiences to share. The small sized classes were also good, enabling us to have more interactive class discussions.

  9. What advice do you have for other APM students hoping to break into your field?

Definitely do work experience or temp in the industry, even if it is in an office support role, to get your foot in the door and then show enthusiasm and a willingness to learn…you never know what it might lead to!

  10. Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after you graduated?

I was already in my role before I graduated from the Certificate IV course and was fortunate enough to have had some relevant skills that are required for the role, and learnt the rest on the job.

  11. What other career goals or aspirations do you have?

My current role is in-house, but I'd like to possibly see what working in a PR agency environment would be like down the track. Eventually I hope to have my own PR consultancy.

  12. What other initiatives have you taken to help your career?

I have continued onto the Diploma of Public Relations course, as part of my professional development. I have begun attending networking sessions to get a better insight into the industry and make connections.
