Andrew Baker
Graduate, Advanced Diploma of Business (Marketing) Major in Sport
Andrew's thoughts on his time at APM are below:
What made you choose to study at APM?
Good reputation in the industry and valuable internship
opportunity.
- What were you doing previously to studying at
APM?
Asia-Pacific Global Service Manager at NCR (IT Industry).
- What did you enjoy about the course you studied?
The course was equal parts theory and practice and strongly
emphasised real-world concepts and experiences. APM knows
what needs to be done to enhance your value in the market.
I made friends there and I value the contribution the quality
staff made to our education.
- What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?
To gain the knowledge and as much as experience as possible
in sports marketing..
- What is your current job title, company name
and job description?
Merchandise Co-ordinator, Wests Tigers Rugby League Pty
Ltd.
- Describe what your current role involves?
My current role involves co-ordinating the Wests Tigers
Official Supporters Shop and merchandising program. This
includes determining product lines, stock ordering and order
processing, customer service, developing promotion strategies
and game day staff management. It also includes updating
the club website and contributing on general marketing strategies.
- How did you find your current job?
After resigning from another position I returned to volunteer
at the club where I interned whilst looking for my next
opportunity. As luck would have it, the opportunity presented
itself at Wests Tigers, as they appreciated what I had to
offer and felt I was capable of doing the job well.
- What were the most successful aspects of the APM
course?
The quality and experience of the teachers played an important
role, but I think the most crucial aspect is the focus on
the importance of being well rounded when you graduate.
The internship program adds incredible value to the course.
- What advice do you have for other APM students
hoping to break into your field?
Focus on doing the work you need to do to excel with your
exams and assignments. There is value in the contributions
of others, so don’t be afraid to work with them. At
the same time, make use of any networking opportunities
that present themselves. Lastly, volunteer in the field
you’re interested in. Experience is vitally important
and will open doors for you in the future!
- Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after
you graduated?
I managed to get a job before I’d completed the course,
so yes it was easy..
- What other career goals or aspirations do you
have?
Ultimately, I’d like to be a marketing manager within
the NRL or similar level organisation. I’d like to
build on that responsibility to develop innovative charity/community
programs.
- What other initiatives have you taken to help
your career?
Keep working hard and setting goals, and keep networking.
You never know when it may come in handy. Keep an eye on
the industry via the media/web..
