Kate's thoughts on her time at APM are below:
- What made you choose to study at APM?
APM had a very personal feel and provided the perfect learning environment for me. At APM you don't feel like another number, you actually get to know your lecturers and build a relationship with them which helps the whole learning process.
- What were you doing previously to studying at
APM?
I had just completed my HSC.
- What did you enjoy about the course you studied?
The subjects were very interesting and relevant to the industry I wanted to work in. The course was short and succinct, which was great because I really wanted to get out there and start working. APM enabled me to do this.
- What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?
To work in PR and events within the beauty or fashion industry.
- What is your current job title, company name and
job description?
Marketing & PR Assistant at Shiseido (Australian headquarters)
- Describe what your current role involves?
The main function of my role is Public Relations. I am responsible for ensuring the brand receives editorial coverage in glossy magazines, newspapers and on TV. Each day I am in contact with beauty editors and continually building my relationship with them to ensure Shiseido is in the latest mags. I also look after advertising, events and marketing promotions with magazines and other likeminded brands to ensure we are exposed to new consumers. I am also responsible for ensuring any new products we launch in Australia are reviewed by our lawyers and approved by other relevant industry bodies such as the TGA.
- How did you find your current job?
www.seek.com.au
- What were the most successful aspects of the APM course?
The internship program was so valuable, which enabled me to gain the necessary experience and skills and also make the right contacts for my first job out of college.
- What advice do you have for other APM students
hoping to break into your field?
Network and know what's going on within the industry you're interested in. Keeping abreast of current trends and news will show your finger is on the pulse and that you are enthusiastic.
- Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after
you graduated?
I got a job two months after I completed my course with Sisley Paris prestige cosmetics as Office and Marketing Coordinator.
- What other career goals or aspirations do you
have?
I would ideally like to complete a degree in Marketing/Communications and perhaps start up my own brand one day!
- What other initiatives have you taken to help
your career?
Take charge, and show initiative. I have always believed in accepting new challenges and opportunities that put me out of my comfort zone. Whilst you may struggle at first, once the task is completed you feel a sense of achievement and have gained more skills and new experiences. Always look at new ways and opportunities to educate your self.
