Lauren Harding
Graduate, Advanced Diploma Business (Marketing) major in Entertainment

Lauren's thoughts on her time at APM are below:

  1. What made you choose to study at APM?

APM attracted me instantly because of the length of the course and because of the internship program. I knew I wanted to work in the music industry and that making contacts and meeting people was very important in order for me to do this. I thought that being an intern for six months was very cool! I also believed that the subjects studied would be very relevant and beneficial.

  2. What were you doing previously to studying at APM?

I completed my HSC in 2004 then decided to study at APM full-time the following year.

  3. What did you enjoy about the course you studied?

I loved the people - we all wanted to be there and we were there for similar reasons. I enjoyed learning things that I was interested in. I loved that the course was practical and the internship was not a disappointment. The internship program is fantastic - what a learning experience that was!

  4. What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?

To work hard and get great marks that I could be proud of. Ultimately, to feel confident that I could follow my dream and find a job in the music industry upon completion of my studies.

  5. What is your current job title, company name and job description?

I am a National Customer Service and Sales Representative, and Extranet Coordinator for Warner Music Australia. I along with 5 others, look after all music retailers across Australia to make sure that they are supplied with our products (in a nutshell).

  6. Describe what your current role involves?

On a daily basis I key orders for music retailers nationally. I answer phone calls for customer and general public enquiries. I look after specific stores where I call to inform them weekly of our new releases and create strategic plans with them in order to increase their sales including mailouts of posters and other POS. I update our extranet site with all current campaigns, chart information and our weekly new releases info. An awesome part of my job is going to all the gigs so I am familiar with what our artists are up to.

  7. How did you find your current job?

I worked hard in my internship which lead to getting a great reference and the friends I made there helped me find the job opportunities available. I went for many job interviews, stayed positive and had a hot resume with the help of APM to find my current position.

  8. What were the most successful aspects of the APM course?

It is great that the lecturers taught from their experience in the workforce and that the subjects were very practical and hands on. We didn't primarily learn from textbooks, we actually practised what we learnt so that we could feel confident that we could use and remember the information. The internship is excellent in even just learning about yourself, not only about the workforce. You grow and you find out how you work and you truly discover what you want to do with your career.

  9. What advice do you have for other APM students hoping to break into your field?

Have a passion, be confident with yourself and build on all the relationships you begin. The people you meet are so important so network, network and network. APM is the best for networking so go to everything and get involved.

  10. Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after you graduated?

Challenging, but I felt ready and confident because of my experiences with APM so I kept at it, believed in myself and my goal was achieved.

  11. What other career goals or aspirations do you have?

My next step is to move into a higher position within a record label, preferably within Warner Music Australia doing marketing and promotions. I see myself in the future in the same industry having my own business and making it big.

  12. What other initiatives have you taken to help your career?

I continue to build on my relationships, work hard, love what I do, take all opportunities and consistently revise my career goals.
