Samantha Martin
Graduate, Advanced Diploma in Business (Marketing) major in Event Management

Sam's thoughts on her time at APM are below:

  1. What made you choose to study at APM?

I chose APM because of the length of the course, the specific course offered and the industry experience that is incorporated into the qualification.

  2. What were you doing previously to studying at APM?

I was living and working in New York as a nanny for 2 years. I also travelled for 3 months throughout Europe.

  3. What did you enjoy about the course you studied?

I enjoyed the industry experience that was obtained through volunteer work and the 6 month internship placement

  4. What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?

My goal was to learn a lot of make the most of the opportunities that were offered by APM.

  5. What is your current job title, company name & job description?

Manager - Event Coordination Sydney Home Show, dmg world media. I am the event coordinator for the Sydney Home Show and I am responsible for the organisation and running of NSW's largest consumer home show.

  6. Describe what your current role involves?

My role sees me plan all aspects of the show from the layout, design as well as the themes of the show. I liaise with exhibitors, sponsors and other stakeholders ensuring their needs are satisfied. I am also involved in the development of seminars and the celebrity kitchen which have become staples of the show.

  7. How did you find your current job?

I did my internship placement with dmg and was approached by them when the role became available.

  8. What were the most successful aspects of the APM course?

I was really impressed with how relevant the theory was to the actual job. This was further cemented by the hands-on experience gained throughout the year.

  9. What advice do you have for other APM students hoping to break into your field?

My advice would be that every time you work in the industry whether it is through volunteer experience or internship you have the chance to impress. Don't get disheartened if a job doesn't come straight out of your internship because chances are you will be kept in mind when future roles arise.

  10. What other career goals or aspirations do you have?

Eventually I would love to own my own business. I would love to live and work overseas as I believe the more varied experience you have the more knowledge you gain which will only help me in event management.

  11. What other initiatives have you taken to help your career?

Networking with people in the industry both formally and informally.
