Graduate, Advanced Diploma in Business (Marketing) major in Sport
Simon’s thoughts on his time at APM are below:
- What made you choose to study at APM?
At the completion of year 12 I wasn’t ready to go
to university. I was sick of study, assignments and exams
and knew the theory-based content of uni would soon wear
me out. I heard about APM at a careers day at my school,
I was interested from the word go. I did a little more research
and within 2 months I was enrolled for the following year.
- What were you doing previously to studying at
APM?
At school – studying for the HSC
- What did you enjoy about the course you studied?
The orientation towards sport, high practical element, lecturers
had the knowledge and experience, everyone there wanted
to be there and the express nature of the course (1 year).
- What was your goal when you enrolled at APM?
Initially my goal was to get through the year and graduate.
As the year progressed and my confidence and knowledge grew,
so did my goals (goal setting was one of the areas studied
within the course). My goal grew to obtaining a credit average
for the year and by completion of the course my goal was/is
to be running my own event consultancy business, which I
see as very achievable.
- What are you doing now?
I have completed a number of contracts throughout the past
months:
- Manager – Technical Officials Bus Services at
Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
- International competitor chaperone/events at the Rip
Curl Pro World Championship Tour Event @ Bells Beach
.
And I have just accepted a job at the Asian games in
Doha, Qatar starting September 1.
- What were the most successful aspects of the APM
course?
The networking opportunities, team work and the practical
applications of the course.
- What advice do you have for other APM students
hoping to break into your field??
Be confident within yourself, don’t be afraid to ask
questions, ALWAYS carry your business card (and ask for
other people’s) and be persistent.
- Did you find it easy or hard to get a job after
you graduated?
I found it easy. But I feel it’s as easy as you make
it, if your prepared to do the things I mentioned above
finding a job for anyone can be easy.
- What other career goals or aspirations do you
have?
Running my own event consultancy business
